Body Building Clothing

There are two categories of body building clothing that we can refer to. The first involves what you wear when you work out. The other is what to wear in a body building competition. The variety of body building clothing is a million dollar market filled with choices and possibilities.

When you are doing your work out, the key to what clothing you wear is comfort. You will want to wear clothes that you can move about in easily. You will be sweating, so you want the fabric to be breathable and allow for enough ventilation that you won't become over-heated.

Some companies manufacture body building clothing that is both stylish as well as functional. For certain people, looking good at the gym is important for them. Still others could care less what they look like. They're there to work their muscles and grow their bodies.

For both men and women, good choices in body building clothing include tank tops and shorts. You can also choose sweat pants or spandex pants that will hold in the sweat you will be generating. This can lend to weight loss as you lose fluid and work your muscles.

Body building clothing that you wear at competitions or contests is very different from what you will wear in the gym. In contests, the emphasis is on showing off your body. Clothing in body building competitions can be very important.

You will want to choose something that will show a maximum amount of skin without being too risqu. For both men and women, that means swim suits. Men should pick a small Speedo-type suit, and women should choose tasteful bikinis.

Showing off your muscle tone depends on the judges being able to see all muscles you are focusing on. By exposing as many muscles as you can, you can show off what you've been working so hard to achieve.

Pick a color that is complementary to your skin tone. You will want to tan before competing, so a light color is always a good choice. Men usually are barefoot in these competitions while women often opt for high heels, but going barefoot is also very appropriate for women as well.

While the clothing you choose for body building isn't as important as the workout you get, it can make a difference between an effective workout and one that isn't. If you are constricted by clothing that is too tight, your body building efforts will be in vain. Plus, you won't want to get overheated during a workout or else you risk injury to yourself and contribute to fatigue.

Choose your body building clothing with comfort in mind for the workout portion, and baring the most amount of skin for competitions. Once you make your choices, let your body building clothing speak for itself.

Body Building Anatomy

The anatomy of body building includes knowing what muscles are located where and how they are grown most effectively. It can be confusing, so as you read this article, find a mirror and locate the muscles on your own body. When you are body building, knowing the anatomy of your body can be very, very helpful.

Of course, you know where your neck is. There are two basic neck muscles that you can focus on in your body building. The upper trapezius runs down the back of your neck from the nape of the neck to the shoulder. The levator scapulae runs next to the first five or six cervical vertebrae in your neck.

The trapezius muscles run down your back from the nape of your neck to the waist on either side of the spine. In body building terms, these muscles are referred to as the trap muscles.

The deltoid muscles are located in your shoulders. The anterior delt is in the front part of the shoulder, the middle delt runs down the side of the shoulder, the posterior deltoid muscles runs down the back part of the shoulder. The rotator cuff muscle runs just below the anterior delt from the armpit straight out.

The muscles in your chest are the pectoral muscles.

Your tricep muscles are located in your arms. They run down the sides of the arms from shoulder to elbow. The biceps, on the other hand are located on the inside of the arm. There are also very distinct muscles in the forearms.

Your abs are located in the stomach area – or abdominal region hence their name!

In the legs, you have the quadriceps muscles in the front – or quads. The muscles in the back of the legs are located in the calf, or lower leg, and hamstring which is the upper leg.

Other major muscle groups you will want to focus on include glutes – or the buttocks, the lats which are in the upper back, and the lower trap muscles which is the lower back.

Knowing your anatomy when you undertake a body building program is a very important part of effectively growing your muscles. When you know the various muscle groups in your anatomy, you can build those muscles and concentrate on them during your workouts. In body building, knowledge of human anatomy isn't difficult when you know what you are looking for. Know your muscles and succeed in your body building goals.

Your Weight in Muscle

You probably have heard that muscle weighs more than fat. Many people notice a small weight gain when they begin lifting weights consistently. As a general rule, if you lift weights 2 to 3 times a week, you can gain 1 pound of muscle per month for about 6 months. After that, the rate of increase slows down as you start to reach your genetic potential. For the same reason, you will make a lot of progress on weight progression at the beginning, but the longer you lift; your progression will lessen because you are reaching your genetic potential.

Don't be alarmed at the extra pounds of weight from weight training because it is well worth the effort. For every 3 pounds of muscle you build, research shows you increase your resting metabolic rate by about 7 percent. For example, if your body burns 1,200 calories per day (not counting exercise or any other movement), you would burn an extra 84 calories per day with those 3 extra pounds of muscle.

Many women have a difficult time outgrowing 2-3 pound dumbbell weights, because they are afraid that if they increase the weight they will bulk up. If you are happy with the strength and appearance of your muscles, you can do a maintenance program with 5 pound weights. However, if you want more strength, you could progress to 8 or 10 pound weights and still not bulk up. Using heavier weights can increase muscle size, but it's highly unlikely that you'll get bulky. Women don't naturally have enough of the hormone, testosterone, required to build huge muscles, and even if you could bulk up, you'd have to use significantly heavier weights.

Another option to tone muscle is to increase your repetitions instead of increasing weight. A high-repetition/light-weight program will develop muscle tone and increase strength and endurance without significantly increasing muscle size.

I like to tell my clients to not just go through the motion when lifting weights. I use the word "squeeze" a lot to describe the contraction of the muscle you should be focusing on. Think about the muscle you are working and squeeze or contract it as you are lifting. You will get a lot more benefit for your efforts if you squeeze the muscle on the lift rather than just raising and lowering the weight without focusing on the muscle.

Workout Without a Gym

We know that using free weights and machines is the fastest and most efficient way there is to improve your metabolism and strength, but for many reasons these may not be convenient or readily accessible to you.

You may also have no access to a commercial gym, home gym or are on business trip, but there can be a solution, a strength-training workout without the need of expensive machines.

As with any exercise, whether you are using your own body weight, machines or free weights, if the resistance doesn't increase, your muscles won't be worked to their maximum capacity and the stimulus these fibres need to grow will be missing.

Exercises done correctly will build the lean muscle and increase your metabolism in the same way as performing exercises at a gymnasium, but without the time constraints and associated costs.

These exercises can be easily done in a bedroom, hotel room, a park, school yard, ceiling rafters in a garage or in a doorway and all you have to do is use your imagination. There will always be a way to add more resistance to your workouts.

Please remember: It doesn't matter where you are working out — at home, a hotel, or a park — always warm up properly before beginning your session, and cool down and stretch when you are finished.

Leg Exercises

Squats –

They build muscle in the thighs, shape the buttocks and improve endurance. Position your feet about 13 to 17 inches apart or at shoulder width, keeping the back straight and your head up. If you want you can use something that will give you some support, i.e. a desk, bookcase, sink etc.

Now squat down to where the tops of the thighs are parallel to the floor, hold for a second and then stand up, but don't bounce at the bottom of the movement, use a nice fluid motion. Always exhale your breath as you stand up.

Lunges –

Stand straight in correct posture; now stand with one leg forward and one leg back. Keeping your abdominal muscles tight and chest up, lower your upper body down, bending your leg (don't step out too far).

You should have about one to two feet between your feet at this stage, the further forward you step, and the more your gluteus and hamstring muscles will have to work.

Do not allow your knee to go forward beyond your toes as you come down and stop where your feel comfortable (try not to let your back come forward) then push directly back up. Do all your reps on one leg then switch legs and do all your reps on the other leg.

Back Exercises

Chin-ups –

Chin-ups are a great upper body workout, particularly targeting your biceps, deltoid and lat muscles. Use a doorway chin-up bar, ceiling rafters in a garage or grab the moulding of your door frame, position your hands with an under hand grip and hang down stretching the lats, slowly raise your body until your chin reaches the bar level.

Pause a moment before slowly lowering yourself back to the starting position. Don't swing or use momentum to get your body to the top, just use the target muscles. Doorway chinning bars remove from the doorway when you are not using them and can be put up and taken down in seconds.

Bent Over Row –

Take up a position with your right hand and right knee braced on a sturdy bed or some other flat surface that will provide a good support. Now pick up a dumbbell or something heavy that you can hold onto with your left hand.

Visualize your arms as hooks and slowly bring the dumbbell or object up to the side of your chest, keeping your back straight, then lower the weight back down to arms length, no lower, on extremes, safe form only please. Concentrate on your back muscles. Reverse the whole procedure and do the exercise now with your right arm.

Chest Exercises

Push-Up –

The push up is used for building chest, shoulders and arms. Lie face down on the floor with your hands about shoulder width apart and keeping your palms turned slightly inward. Now push-up until your arms are straight, lower and repeat for repetitions.

To make it more difficult elevate your feet. Try placing the toes of your feet on a stable, elevated surface such as a bench, chair or a stair. Straightening your body, position your hands on the floor at shoulder width, lower your body until your chest touches the floor at the bottom, and then return to the starting position in a nice fluid motion.

Dips –

This exercise can be done between two sturdy chairs or other surfaces that provide stability. The dip is another great upper body exercise. It's a compound movement as well and involves working all the muscles that the push up works.

Keep your head up and body as vertical as possible. For the beginning of the movement, start at the top (arms fully extended) and lower yourself until your upper arms are parallel to the seat of the chairs, hold and then push up to the top of the movement until your arms are fully extended again. Keep looking straight ahead and don't bounce at the bottom of the movement.

Adding Weight

Although the simple weight of your own body is enough resistance to provide an effective workout we need progressive overload (added resistance) to become stronger.

So all we need to do is add some weight wherever we can find some. Because there are no metal plates and fancy machines to use it doesn't matter because the body doesn't care where it is as long as it's receiving resistance of some kind.

You can use heavy books clasped in your hands. You can buy some cheap weighted dumbbells or ankle weights. A weighted vest will also allow you to add resistance for both chin-ups and push-ups. Try to buy one that will let you remove and add weight as you see fit. Also a backpack filled with books can be perfect for most of the exercises and is a cheap alternative.

How about a couple of buckets and fill them with a certain level of water? As you get stronger fill them with more water. This is perfect because depending on the exercise, all you need to do is to increase or decrease the amount of water in the buckets for the required amount of resistance.

To wrap things up…

We know that using free weights and machines are the fastest and most efficient way there is to gain lean muscle and strength, but by performing the exercises in this article you'll find that they will provide you with the same benefits as going to a gymnasium but without the ongoing costs and time constraints.

Why You Should NOT Try to Isolate Muscle Groups When Weight Training

Working as a fitness professional, there is one type of question I get all the time that shows that many people are missing the big picture regarding the benefits of strength training. This popular question usually goes something like this:

"What exercise can I do to isolate my _______ (insert your muscle of choice – abs, quads, biceps, triceps, etc)?"

It doesn't matter which muscle someone is asking about, they always seem to be asking how to 'isolate' it. My first response to this question is always – Why in the world would you want to isolate it?

The first thing I try to teach my clients is that the body does not work well in muscle isolation. Rather, it works better in movements along a kinetic chain; that is, large portions of the body assist other portions of the body in completing a complex movement. In fact, there really is no such thing as true muscle isolation. There is almost always a nearby muscle group that will assist in some way with whatever movement you are doing. However, this article compares attempting to 'isolate' body parts via single-joint exercises to the much more effective strategy of performing multi-joint complex movements.

When you attempt to 'isolate' muscles by performing single-joint exercises, you are actually creating a body that is non-functional and will be more prone to injury. Essentially, you are creating a body that is a compilation of body parts, instead of a powerful, functional unit that works together.

Now if you really want to end up hobbling around in a body bandaged up with joint problems, tendonitis, and excess body fat, then by all means, continue trying to 'isolate' body parts. On the other hand, if you would rather have a lean, muscular, injury-free, functional body that works as a complete powerful unit to perform complex movements (in athletics or even everyday tasks), then you need to shift your focus away from muscle isolation. Believe me, focusing on how well your body functions will give you the side effect of a body that looks even better than it would have if you focused on muscle isolation. For example, take a look at the physiques of any NFL running backs, wide receivers, or even world class sprinters. Trust me when I say that these guys pretty much NEVER train for muscle isolation (their strength coaches wouldn't be crazy enough to let them), yet they are absolutely ripped to shreds! Just look at guys like Maurice Green or Terrell Owens and tell me who wouldn't want a physique like those guys.

Another benefit to moving away from the 'muscle isolation' mindset to a more 'complex movement' mindset is that you will find it much easier to lose body fat. The reason is that by focusing more on multi-joint complex movements as opposed to single-joint muscle isolation, you not only burn a lot more calories during each workout, but you also increase your metabolic rate, and stimulate production of more fat burning and muscle building hormones like growth hormone and testosterone.

Let's look at an example. The machine leg extension is a single joint exercise that works mainly the quadriceps, can potentially cause knee joint instability in the long run, and doesn't even burn that many calories. On the other hand, exercises like squats, lunges, step-ups, and deadlifts are all multi-joint complex movements that work hundreds of muscles in the body (including the quadriceps) as a functional unit, create more stable and strong joints in the long run (when done properly), and also burn massive quantities of calories compared to the single-joint exercises.

Tips on How to Promote Muscle Growth Fast

Muscle growth is not just about lifting weights and going to the gym everyday but there is a science behind it. You have to remember that the body has certain ways on dealing with stress. Every person also has different metabolism rates, and because of this, they may need different exercise programs.

When it comes to body building, you should be able to know about the different theories concerning it. By knowing about the theories, you will be able to apply it in your exercise regime and get the results you want at a much faster rate.

For building muscles, you have to remember that resting is very important if you lift weights at the gym. Never ever exercise the same muscle group everyday unless you are concentrating on fat loss. However, if you want to gain muscle, resting the muscles is a very important part of it.

For example, if you exercise your chest today, don't exercise it tomorrow. This means no bench presses tomorrow.

You have to consider the fact that whenever we lift weights, we injure our muscles. Therefore, the body will react by fixing it with bigger and much stronger muscles. And, in order to promote muscle repair, we need to get some sleep and let the muscle we injure rest for at least two days.

Diet is also an important factor when you want to gain muscle mass. Always remember that protein is very important when it comes to muscle growth. Protein helps in rebuilding muscles and promote muscle repair. So, how much protein you should eat? Basically, the rule of thumb is that for every pound you weigh, you need at least 1.5 grams of protein. This means that if you weigh 200 pounds, you need to take in 300 grams of protein a day. That is if you work out regularly.

There are supplements that you may want to try. Some are rich in amino acids that also promote protein production and muscle growth, while there is also whey protein that directly introduces the needed daily protein intake in your body.

If you want to gain muscle, another key is proper execution of exercises and the right exercises.

The right exercises for muscle gain are usually free weight exercises. As much as possible, you should do free weight exercises and minimize the use of machines. Although machines do lower the risk of injury, you have to remember that free weight is much more effective in promoting muscle growth. Always remember that in order to promote muscle growth, you also need to strengthen the supporting muscles. For example, if you want to promote muscle growth on your biceps, you also need to strengthen the muscles that surround the biceps.

And, only free weight exercises can do this. Machine exercises virtually does not put any strain on the supporting muscles, which means that it will not promote the growth of your primary muscles as well as free weight exercises can.

Proper execution of the exercise is also very important. By doing the exercises slowly and in a controlled and smooth motion, you will promote maximum muscle contractions which means that it will promote muscle growth.

These are just some of the many body building muscle gain tips that you need to keep in mind. There are quite a lot of techniques that will be able to help you gain muscle. With these tips, you will be able to get the body you want in no time at all.

Things You Need To Know To Effectively Gain Muscle

Have you ever wanted to have that great looking body that you can be proud of? Do you want to have big muscles or just a greatly defined body that everyone will admire? Well, you have to remember that just lifting weights in the gym is not enough for you to gain muscles.

You have to remember that there is different exercise programs suited for different people. There are specific exercises for losing weight and burning fat, and there are also exercises designed for weight gain. You will even see exercises for strength training.

If you want to gain muscle mass, then you have to do body building exercises. In body building exercises, you will have a series of exercises in a day and a different one the next day. Usually, body building exercises will have 3 exercise days. On each day, different muscle groups will be targeted. However, the abs should be exercised everyday as this is considered to be one of the most important muscle groups that you need to exercise and it is also one of the hardest.

On day one, the chest and triceps are the muscle groups that you need to exercise. For the chest exercise, you will need to do at least four to five different chest exercises that will target different parts of the chest. The same goes for the triceps. Do 10 repetitions of each exercise with 3 sets.

On day two, exercise the back and the biceps. Four exercises for the back and four for the biceps. Also, do 10 repetitions for each of the exercises for 3 sets.

On day three, exercise the leg, thigh, and butt muscles and the shoulders. Four exercise for the legs, and four for the shoulders. Also, for each exercise, do 10 repetitions with 3 sets.

On each day, you need to have four or five exercises for the abdominal muscles. Sit ups, and crunches are two of the exercises that you may want to

You have to remember that the key in gaining muscle mass is getting adequate rest and eating foods that are high in protein. When you exercise, you have to remember that you are injuring your muscles in a controlled way. When you injure your muscles, it will repair those injuries by adding more muscle tissues. And, in order for the muscles to repair itself, you need to let it rest. Eating foods that are rich in protein, such as beef and soya milk protein will be able to make the muscle repair process faster and also make it stronger.

This is why body building exercises have intervals when it comes to exercising each muscle group. It allows each of the muscle group to have enough time to repair itself.

It is also very important to remember that you should exercise every muscle group stated. Besides, you can't expect to have a great looking biceps, triceps or chest if the back can't support it. You also need to exercise your back in order for you to develop the chest, biceps, and triceps. Also, you have to exercise the shoulders in order for you to develop your arms. Everything is connected.

These are the things that you have to remember about body building or muscle gain. Always remember that resting is very important. Allow the muscles you exercised today to rest for two days. Get enough sleep and eat foods with high protein content and you will be able to gain muscle in no time at all.

Why My Muscles Won’t Grow? Cortisol Stress Hormone Destroy Muscle Tissues

There are many reasons why your muscles won't grow or why your muscle growth is retarded. One main culprit for your muscle tissue to in a catabolic and not in an anabolic state is the stress hormone called cortisol. This stress hormone, cortisol, is produced by your body when you are under stressful situations.

Yes, any type of stress, whether they are mental stress, physical stress or just emotional stress will trigger off an increased in the production of cortisol hormones. A high level of cortisol is always a bane for bodybuilders and that in itself, is creating more stress.

When you exercise or especially weightlifting body building exercises, you are placing a tremendous stress on your body. This in turn will cause the cortisol hormone in your body to rise to unacceptable level which may destroy your muscle tissues, bone density and causes weight gain especially abdominal fat. Ohhh…that abdominal fat that would not go away.

This hormone hates your muscles and wants you to grow fat. It takes away protein from the muscles. However to be fair to this hormone, the cortisol hormone has its positive functions.

Cortisol is produced by the adrenal cortex and is commonly known as a stress hormone because the level of cortisol in your body rises sharply when you are under stress. This hormone plays an important role in your body's metabolic function, it facilitates cardiovascular function, carbohydrate metabolism and controls inflammation. After all, it is a steroid hormone.

As more cortisol is being produced, your muscle tissue breaks down further since the amino acids from your muscle protein is being converted into glucose for energy. This hormone also blocks new muscle tissues from growing because it interferes in protein synthesis in your muscles.

How to lower cortisol level?

* Get enough sleep – Let your body recuperate from the day's stress and let the body rebuild its wears and tears. A lack of sleep will put your body under further stress and thus increasing cortisol levels.

* Avoid stress – Take up yoga, read a book, take a break from whatever you are doing. Learn meditation and breathing techniques to reduce everyday stress. Take a week or so break from your exercise routine after 6-8 weeks of regular training. As your body learns how to relax, the level of cortisol hormone will fall correspondingly.

* Do not over train – Over training is a common issue amongst athletes of all types. This is especially so in bodybuilding and weight lifting. You are already damaging your muscles when you lift weights, don't let cortisol hormones rob your muscles of the much needed proteins and preventing muscle repair and growth.

Once your body and mind is free from stress, your cortisol production will be at a healthy level and you will once again see your muscles growing, provided that you are doing other things that are conducive to getting your muscles to grow.

The Three Essentials in Gaining Muscle Big Time

Tired of looking in the mirror and not seeing the superman that you want to be? Do you crave to have the Hollywood hunk abs and biceps? Most of us do, but the entire process of getting muscles is simply strenuous. Hollywood actors have all the time in the world to bulk up and have an army of trainers and experts to help them, and this could cost an arm and a leg. But even with those aspects gaining muscle is not going to happen if there is no determination.

For one thing, it's undeniably extremely hard to gain muscles; there is no doubt about it. You have to invest a lot of time and patience. You must have full commitment to meet your goal. But aside from just going under a rigorous training program, there are certainly numerous aspects one must consider. All of these aspects together can help make a program effective and let you achieve your goal at the fastest time possible.

Here are the three essential steps in those aspects which can greatly determine the success a person will have in gaining muscles.

A) Have the proper diet – A lot of people misconstrue the word "diet." A lot of them think that diet equates to starving one's self. A diet means that a person, depending on his goal, has the proper and correct food intake. If you are thinking of gaining muscle and weight, then eating more calories than what you would be expecting to burn when you have an extensive workout would be necessary to fuel the growth of muscles. You will need to have a balanced intake of protein, soy and fats. A nutritionist or dietician will be able to help you know what is good for you.

B) Develop a strength training program – Muscles are built when they are regularly pushed to the limit. Perpetual couch potatoes don't build muscles, they grow guts. You must develop a strength training program which would make you lift weights that you won't be able to easily lift. This should go on until you progress to heavier weights. Your muscle will react to the heavy lifting and will grow to compensate for the needed strength to lift the heavy weights. As you move on to heavier weights, the muscle will continually grow for strength compensation.

C) Have sufficient rest – Contrary to popular belief, your muscles don't grow while your lifting weights, they grow when they are resting. As you work out, your muscles are strained and flexed to their limit, especially if you lift the proper weights. When you go to sleep, the damage done to the muscles will be repaired and this is when they grow. 8 hours of sleep daily is the minimum requirement for proper muscle growth.

Some people add supplements and medications which can also help in growth promotion of muscles. There are now many of them available in the market, make sure though that they are legal and safe for you.

So there it is the three basic essentials one would need to follow in gaining muscle. Commit to these basics and you will see that all your efforts will not go to waste. Now get off that couch and start pumping iron.

The Right Workout Routine for Gaining Muscles

Have you ever been to the gym lately and you feel like a skinny geek among those guys who had huge muscles? If you do, then don't let those guys intimidate you. You have to remember that they have been through on what you are going through. They were also skinny or fat once and they worked hard to get the body they have today. In fact, they may even help you get the results you want if you ask them politely.

They may give you some tips on how to gain muscles fast and some of these tips may actually work. However, if you really want to gain muscles fast, then here are some of the right workout routines that you should follow in order for you to get that serious muscle that you have always wanted to have.

First of all, you need to remember that in order to gain muscles you should emphasize more on free weight exercises. Machine exercises may seem to be appealing as it lowers the risk of injury. However, you have to consider that in order to gain muscles, you need to strengthen the supporting muscles first, such as the synergist and the stabilizers. Machines don't do this as the machines themselves act as a stabilizer.

Free weights will require your muscles as well as the supporting muscles to work really hard. This is why you will get tired a lot quicker when doing free weight exercises.

If you hear someone say that you need to exercise the same muscle group everyday, then don't take this advice. This will slow down the growth rate of your muscles. You have to remember that working out means that you are actually injuring or tearing your muscles. If you do this everyday, it will lead to the deterioration of your muscles.

So, why work out if you are only tearing or injuring your muscles? You have to remember that when you injure your muscles, the body will react by replacing or adding more muscle tissues to strengthen the injured muscles. This means muscle growth or an increase in the muscle mass. And, the best time for your muscles to grow is by resting or sleeping.

Try exercising different parts of the body each day. For example, on day one, you might want to exercise your chest and triceps. On day two, exercise the back and biceps. And, on day three, exercise the legs and shoulders. On each day, always exercise your abdominal muscles with sit ups, crunches and other abdominal exercises.

After day three, you should rest the next day and after that, start again with day one. Do this for two weeks and change the exercises to avoid reaching the plateau where your muscles become so used to the exercises that it will not grow anymore.

On each muscle group, try to create 4 to 5 exercises. For example, for the chest, do bench presses, inclined dumbbell presses, lying dumbbell fly, and cable crossovers. For each exercise do 10 reps and 3 sets each.

These are the things that you need to remember about muscle gain and the correct exercise routines for it. Always remember that proper execution is the key to muscle growth. Resting is also very important as well as diet.
