Will Using A Body Building DVD Work

Using a body building DVD doesn't offer the same benefits as working out in your gym under the watchful gaze of the instructor. But you could use it to provide some inspiration if you are feeling a little bit overwhelmed and wonder if you will ever see the results you crave. They are also a great source of information on bodybuilding helping you to become more familiar with the terms of the sport. The better productions will also include sections on the types of cardio exercise routines you should be following as well as useful hints and tips on your new bodybuilding diet.

They should recommend plenty of vegetables and fruit, whole grains, nuts, seeds, low fat dairy products, lean meat, fish and eggs. They shouldn't be suggesting that you take steroids but if you are going to do a lot of weight training you may want to consider some protein supplements. Discuss this first with your instructor.

Body building DVDs should be rated so that you know whether you are looking at exercises for beginners or those that know their way around the weights. You will probably not have the correct equipment at home but you can often substitute normal household items such as bottles of water or bags of sugar. Don't be tempted to think that you cannot do yourself an injury using these items. Lifting any sort of weights can cause a problem – just ask the mother of any young child.

You should always obey the rules of exercise even when working out at home. Always do your warm up and cool down exercises. Never start on a full stomach and don't overstretch yourself. Drink enough to keep you hydrated but don't over do it with the liquid intake. You should eat small meals one to two hours before you start exercising.

Chose a DVD aimed at the type of results you are looking to achieve. You can get bodybuilding DVDs that target specific projects for example the swimsuit workouts tend to be very popular. If you want to follow a bodybuilding program for women aimed at achieving the perfect bikini body, buy one from a trainer who looks like you would want to. If you are into the muscle look then buy a DVD from one of the women bodybuilding champions. Don't bother wasting your time using a bodybuilding DVD aimed at men as weight training for women involves a totally different exercise regime. You do not want to end up confused.

Look for a bodybulding program designed by an expert in this field. If the DVD promises to increase your chest size, dump it as this is a huge myth associated with female bodybuilding. If anything lifting weights may increase the width of your back but unfortunately is not the way to achieving larger breasts.

In addition to completing the workout on your body building DVD, do get outside in the air to go running, walking or any other form of aerobic activity. Not only will you lose weight but you will also feel better.

What Is The Correct Diet For Body Building

There is a common myth going around that you can go on a see all, eat all diet for body building. The theory is that as you are lifting weights, you will burn off anything you eat. This is pure nonsense. If you continue to eat unhealthy foods you will never get the body you desire.

When bodybuilding or following any other form of exercise, you should also look at your eating habits. Instead of eating three large meals a day, you need to start eating five to six smaller ones every 3 hours or so. This will help to burn calories by speeding up your metabolism but it will also stop you feeling deprived which is a common feature of some diets. Also if you are working out and your body is not getting enough fuel you can enter something called the catabolic state. This is where your body thinks you are actually starving and starts to store calories as fat and feeds on lean muscle instead. The exact opposite of the effect you are trying to achieve which is to build lean muscle and burn calories!

Eating quality food more regularly, you should also find your blood sugars are more regulated and you are less likely to reach for a sugary snack. Every meal in your diet for bodybuilding should include a mixture of food groups. If you only eat carbohydrates at one meal sitting, your energy levels will spike and crash. You will also produce too much insulin tempting your body into becoming a fat storing device.

Your body needs a combination of protein and complex carbohydrates to work at its optimum levels. Good examples of proteins that you should be consuming are eggs, chicken and turkey breast, tuna and good quality red meats. You also need some good fats in your diet although less than 30% of your calorie intake should come from unsaturated fats.

Diet supplements are big business in the world of bodybuilding. Some work, others don't and some actually harm your health. Approach all supplements with a degree of caution. If they are being recommended as part of your routine, ask why? What is it that you are specifically lacking that taking these powders or pills will accomplish?

If you are a vegetarian or a vegan and want to start weight training you need to be extra careful. Unless you have a great well balanced diet, you may find that you lack energy and focus. This doesn't mean that you have to start eating meat but a lot of bodybuilders do eat eggs, tuna and other fish. In other words they cease to be strictly vegetarian but do still avoid meat. They ensure that they eat a wide variety of vegetables, complex carbohydrates and good sources of vegetable protein such as Kidney beans and tofu. Vegans can be successful bodybuilders without compromising their beliefs but they need specialist help and advice on their diet for bodybuilding.

Tips For Body Building Programs

The best body building programs are those that are designed for a specific individual. Although us women usually all want to target the same areas i.e. bums, tums and thighs, we all have different needs and goals. The instructor at your gym should sit down with you to discuss your goals and aspirations and then together the two of you would come up with a plan that will work for you.

Before you start any bodybuilding program you would always warm up and cool down when you are finished. This helps to reduce the risk of injury to your muscles and is the most important part of any training process. Weight training usually involves squats, leg presses, stomach crunches, pushdowns and pulldowns. All of these terms can sound like a foreign language but once you have practiced the routine a few times you will be surprised at how quickly you pick it up and see results.

The pulldown will exercise your back, shoulders and arms. Those female models on TV in their skimpy t-shirts will have all been practicing their lat pulldowns. A stomach crunch is the modern version of the sit-up. You have to lift your shoulders and upper chest off the ground for seconds at a time forcing the abdominal muscles to contract. You need to do multiple sets of these in order to get that washboard stomach we all crave.

Do not try to do too much too soon. Overtraining is bad for your body and can affect your hormones as well as your immune system never mind the risk of injury to your bones or joints. If you have hit the weights too hard, take some time out to recover.

You need to include aerobic exercise in your routine to get the most out of your weight training sessions. Getting aerobically fit means that your muscles will be healthier and you will get the results you crave much quicker. You need to eat properly as well. Just because you are now following a body building program does not give you license to eat whatever you want whenever you want. Bodybuilders are generally very careful about what they consume. We will forget about the obvious examples of those that aren't i.e. the ones that abuse steroids.

A committed bodybuilder will review their diet to make sure that they are eating quality protein in the right quantities and that they are getting sufficient healthy fats. They will also make sure to keep their body properly hydrated but not overdo it as this can cause a new set of problems. They will also eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Alcohol and smoking don't form part of this diet!

When you are following your bodybuilding program you need to think of safety as well. Only lift those weights you can manage. It is pointless pulling muscles or causing yourself another injury due to carelessness. Always make sure that weights are secure and don't leave them lying around for others to fall over. A body building program can produce excellent results but only when you pay attention to these basics.

Lose Belly Fat With Stability Ball Exercises

Exercising with a stability ball is a great way to lose belly fat. A stability ball will cost about $30 and you can get them from most sporting stores. A stability ball may be just what you need to get that flat stomach you have dreamed of. Working out with a stability ball will give you twice the muscle fibers in your stomach than if you work out doing regular crunches without a ball. This has been researched at Sacramento State University in California.

Here are three great lose belly fat exercises for beginners to get you started.

1. Sit on the stability ball and put your hands on the ball for balance. You can also place your hands behind your head which is a better strength exercise but is a little more difficult. Begin to roll your hips slowly in a circle toward the right. Start off making small circles and as you become more comfortable and confident with the exercise you can make larger circles. Do 10 to 20 circles and then repeat the exercise making circles to the left. This exercise works the muscles of the stomach making it a great exercise to help lose belly fat.

2. This exercise is called the Seated March. Sit on the ball with your back straight and your stomach pulled in. Lift first your right foot and then the left foot in a slow march. As you become more comfortable with this exercise try lifting your knees higher and march faster. When you become really confident with the exercise you can add a bounce on the ball in time with your marching. Continue with the seated march exercise for around 2 minutes.

3. This last exercise is called the Seated Balance. Once again sit on the ball with your back straight and your tummy pulled in. If you are a beginner then place your hands on the ball for balance, if you are confident enough you can put your hands behind your head. Lift your right foot off the floor and hold it in the air for about 5 seconds. Lower your foot and then lift the left foot and hold it in the air for 5 seconds. Repeat these moves 5 to 10 times while making sure that you continue to have your back straight and your tummy pulled in.

These three exercises have you sitting on the stability ball. These are great exercises if you are a beginner to using the stability ball but as you gain confidence you can introduce more exercises, some of which will have you starting from the floor, your knees or even lying on top of the ball.

Stability balls usually come with a manual that will include a number of different exercises with illustrations so you can see exactly how to do them and what benefit you will gain from them.

There are different size balls available and you should choose the size based on your height. If you are less than 5'1 then you should get an 18 inch ball. If you are between 5'1 and 5'8 you should get a 22 inch ball. If you are over 5'8 then you will need a 26 inch ball.

Stability balls really are a great way to lose belly fat and you will soon feel good with your new flat tummy.

Body Building Women Is That You

When I say body building women, what image comes into your mind? Is it of a well toned lady with a flat stomach, small waist and a pert bum? Or is it a woman who looks more like a man with bulging muscles all over the place? It is probably the second option but this is not how most body building women look. The ones with the excessive muscles have usually been taking steroids and let's face facts. A woman's body was not meant to cope with an overload of testosterone.

If you want to tone up and slim down, you should seriously consider doing a bodybuilding course at your local gym. Find an instructor who specializes in helping females to work out as our routine will be slightly different to the male bodybuilders. Most of us women want to target our stomach, bums and thighs as these are the areas where fat seems to be attracted to most.

A lot of people use the excuse that if they build up muscle it will turn to fat when they stop working out. This is a bit like thinking brass is going to turn into gold. Fat and muscle are two completely different substances and one cannot turn into the other. What tends to happen is that when you are bodybuilding you will eat more. In fact the recommended diet is to eat at least five or six small meals a day with plenty of quality protein, vegetables and healthy fats. If you stop working out, your body will not need as much fuel as it did previously. But often people forget this little point and continue eating at the same level. If you are not burning the energy produced by your food intake, you will put on weight.

Certain bodybuilding activities add shape and definition to the areas you want to target. Your instructor will be able to help you come up with a bodybuilding routine to maximize the effect of your training. You will also need to do at least 6 sessions of cardio workout a week. The bad news is that these are most effective when done before you have had breakfast so you need to set that alarm clock for a little earlier! Another myth about bodybuilding is that you cannot combine it with aerobic exercise as it will prevent you building muscle. In my opinion this is rubbish. Aerobic exercise burns calories and fat, is good for your health and actually helps to increase muscle mass. So make sure it is part of your new bodybuilding routine.

Following a bodybuilding diet will help you to get the most out of your weight training program. Eating smaller but more regular meals will boost your metabolism helping to burn the calories. It will also help to regulate your blood sugar levels helping to prevent those cravings that can cause the end of the diet. And perhaps most importantly you won't get that deprived starving feeling associated with most weight loss plans.

If you need some inspiration consider the fact that the models you see on TV with their superflat stomachs and toned legs are all body building women.

Increase Your Training Intensity – Pre-Exhaustion

You can only build muscle tissue if you can generate progressively stronger muscular contractions, so this calls for an emphasis on finding ways to increase exercise intensity. This should not be confused with exercise duration as maximum training intensity will actually shorten the time needed to achieve maximal muscular growth.

In an earlier article I outlined the ways in which you can intensify your training. Here we'll focus on the role that pre-exhaustion has to play in intensifying the training effect.

When an exercise employs two or more muscles it will be impossible to achieve failure for the primary muscle as the weakest muscle will give out first. This is perhaps best explained by giving an example. When targeting the chest, most exercises involve use of the triceps which is a relatively small and weak muscle. When performing the incline bench press for example, the triceps will fail before the pectorals have the opportunity to work to failure thus limiting the value of the exercise.

How do you get around this? By first performing an exercise that isolates and tires the pectorals before immediately moving on to the main exercise. For maximum benefits there should be no rest between the pre-exhaust exercise and the main compound exercise.

Beginners don't need to worry about pre-exhaust routines but when they advance to intermediate level they can be introduced once a week for each body part.

Examples of pre-exhaust routines commonly performed by bodybuilders are listed below:

Biceps – barbell curls and close-grip, palms-up pulldowns.

Triceps – pressdowns and dips.

Pectorals – flyes and bench presses.

Lats – dumbbell pullovers and barbell rows.

Deltoids – dumbbell laterals and presses behind neck.

Traps – shrugs and upright rows.

Thighs – leg extensions and squats.

Increase Your Training Intensity – Partial Repetitions

You can only build muscle tissue if you can generate progressively stronger muscular contractions, so this calls for an emphasis on finding ways to increase exercise intensity. This should not be confused with exercise duration as maximum training intensity will actually shorten the time needed to achieve maximal muscular growth.

In an earlier article I outlined the ways in which you can intensify your training. Here we'll focus on the role that partial repetitions have to play in intensifying the training effect.

One of the biggest dangers confronting serious bodybuilders is the tendency to overtrain. Bodybuilders at the advanced level must resist the temptation to seek improvement by simply adding more exercises or extra workouts to an already demanding schedule.

One way to maintain progress yet avoid overtraining is to make constructive use of partial repetitions. This allows the introduction of additional intensity without adding significantly to the duration of training. To get the most out of partial repetitions you should follow these simple steps:

1. Use a much heavier weight than you would for the full range version of the same exercise.

2. Perform partial reps only from the halfway stage or mid-point of the exercise.

3. Use this method primarily on lagging body parts.

4. Perform only one exercise for one set per body part.

5. Use only as a supplement to full range movement exercises, not instead of.

Increase Your Training Intensity – Negative Repetitions

You can only build muscle tissue if you can generate progressively stronger muscular contractions, so this calls for an emphasis on finding ways to increase exercise intensity. This should not be confused with exercise duration as maximum training intensity will actually shorten the time needed to achieve maximal muscular growth.

In an earlier article I outlined the ways in which you can intensify your training. Here we'll focus on the role that negative repetitions have to play in intensifying the training effect.

At the most basic level, human muscles have three types of strength:

1. Positive strength – the ability to raise a weight.

2. Static strength – the ability to hold a weight.

3. Negative strength – the ability to lower a weight.

Many bodybuilders concentrate primarily on their muscles' positive and static strength but equal focus should be given to negative strength, or lowering the weight, if true muscle failure is to be achieved. You can emphasize this aspect of training by completing a set of negative reps after reaching positive failure.

You'll need one or two partners to lift the weight to the top position so that you can lower it under your own control. Once you can no longer control the descent, the set ends. Take special care with leg exercises and avoid negative squats to protect the knees.

Beginners should not attempt negative reps while intermediate and advanced bodybuilders can be imaginative in how they incorporate negative reps into their training programs.
