Acne Medication – Research of Side Affects

Acne is an extremely common skin affliction affecting around 85% of teenagers and young adults as well as a significant proportion of adults.

With a plethora of acne information available, it may also be difficult to establish what is the right treatment and/or medication. In a previous article I suggested that as all of us are individuals, it is likely so to will the treatment for each person's acne.

Let's delve a bit further into treatments and medication. In the case of mild or even slightly worse acne, a good preventative and treatment regime if rigorously followed is often found to control the affliction.

However there are obviously sufferers with severe acne where over the counter or non prescription treatments have not had the desired impact. Whilst I would suggest in this instance finding a reputable dermatologist you will likely find that an acne treatment regime still has a place in assisting the overall treatment.

It would be extremely advisable for those prescribed medications for the more severe acne affliction to carefully research the medication prior to commencing. The clear example of this is the medication for "recalcitrant modular acne" being Isotretinoin (marketed as Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis & Sotret). The US Food and Drug Administration provides significant information in relation to this particular drug however in short it is known to cause birth defects and is being examined in relation to reports of suicide or suicidal thoughts associated with the use of the drug.

A Risk Management program called iPLEDGE in relation to this drug is in place with information and updates available.

The program is ensuring adequate controls are in place in relation to the use of this drug and the important message is "Do not purchase this drug over the internet".

There are a range of prescribed medications available with those applied to the skin for more mild to moderate cases and oral medications for more severe.

Some of these include:

* Oral antibiotics
* Oral contraceptives
* Azelaic Acid
* Benzoyl peroxide
* Clindamycin
* Erythromycin
* Sodium sulfacetamide
* Tazarotene
* Tretinoin
* Adapalene

The message is still however to do the appropriate research as information on some drugs may change significantly over time.

Summary
Whilst medications are vital in the treatment of a significant number of conditions aside from acne, it is always wise to research the medication to allow a balanced approach or weighing up the benefits prior to commencing.

This is obviously extremely clear in the case of the drug Isotretinoin for severe acne.

Acne Getting You Down? The Future of Acne Treatments Looks Bright with New Laser Therapies

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the sebaceous hair follicles. Each follicle contains a tiny hair and multiple sebaceous glands. Under normal circumstances, sebum, the oily substance made by the sebaceous glands, travels up the hair follicle and out to the skin's surface. However, with acne, sebum is trapped within the follicle and skin bacteria multiplies within the clogged pores. Acne develops on those areas of the skin where sebaceous glands are most numerous: the face, scalp, neck, chest, back, and upper arms and shoulders. Acne typically begins in adolescence, although onset in the twenties or thirties is common.

One approach to treating acne is to target the bacteria that produces the inflammation associated with acne known as Propionobacterium Acnes, or P. acnes. P. acnes releases porphyrins, which are naturally occurring molecules in the body. When porphyrins absorb certain wavelengths of light, free radical damage is produced which destroys the bacteria.

Porphyrins absorb light best in the blue wavelength range – 400 nm to 430 nm. A low intensity blue light source (405 nm to 420 nm) has been studied for the treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne. In the study, two 15-minute exposures a week for a period of four weeks produced a 60 percent reduction in acne in 80 percent of patients. Reported remissions from acne lasted as long as three to eight months.

Another way to treat acne using laser technology is to damage the sebaceous glands by a thermal or heat effect. In a recent study, a 1450 nm diode laser was used to perform four treatments one month apart. There was 100 percent clearing of acne in 16 of the 17 patients evaluated six months after the last treatment. Skin biopsies performed immediately after treatment showed heat-induced alterations of the sebaceous glands, reducing the amount of oil produced.

"While lasers have been used successfully for acne scarring for years, their use in actually controlling existing acne is a major breakthrough and could be an excellent alternative for those patients who have had minimal success with traditional therapies," explained by a dermatologist. "However, this treatment is still investigational and not widely available yet. So not all patients will have access to it and the procedure is not covered by insurance."

Patients need to be aware that many states do not distinguish who can and cannot perform procedures with laser/light sources. "Since skin treatments using lasers can carry potential side effects, they should be performed by a qualified physician or under direct physician supervision. I encourage patients to ask their physician questions about who will be performing laser surgery, including their qualifications," cautioned by the dermatologist.

Acne – Living La Vida Loca

Now, the story I am about to tell you, is about one young man who has discover an acne cure in the most unusual manner. Acne is like the song; "Living La Vida Loca", it makes you live this life where you can't be yourself.

Many people don't understand what acne really is and how to find a cure for acne. But no one knows acne like my friend, Cleo. Cleo is one ugly guy, with huge acne scars in face.

But, do you know what separates Cleo and his acne scars from the rest of you?

Cleo, has found the perfect acne treatment that has enabled him to live the life of his dreams. Did he find a miracle cure for acne, by all mean not. What Cleo thought me was that to cure acne you first have to cure yourself internally and not focus on the outside.

He is the most friendliest and you can't find a nicer person, he has charm and personality, and you even tend to forget that he has acne scars. He said that he tried many different products over the years, but nothing worked, so he eventually realized that he wasn't going to find an external cure, so he found an eternal cure.

The problem is that like Cleo, many others, they wait until their acne has flared up to a point of no return, don't let that happen to you, take charge of your acne condition and start looking for a all natural acne home cure today.

So, before you set about thinking that there is no cure, there are methods to cure acne, but you have to first discover what type of acne you have. As an acne sufferer myself, I first cured my acne at the age of nineteen.

My acne cure didn't come cheap, I must admit that, I tried all kinds of different acne medications, but nothing worked. I just kept on believing that I would eventually find a cure and that is exactly what happened, I just kept believing that I would find a cure, so you too have to continue believing.

I used a simple product called Clearasil, today there are many better products online, but be very careful, because certain products can do more harm than good. You have to know which products works best on your skin type.

When I was an acne sufferer, I choose to educate myself on all acne issues, I didn't fell for any acne myths. Stop, reading all the false illusions online, they have no clue what acne is, they are simply creating little websites, with no accurate acne information or acne tips, only to try and make a commission from others.

I am not one who has no knowledge of acne, I used to dread going outside, hiding from friends, just wondering what someone was thinking whenever they stared at my face. But, I didn't let that bother me, I was interested in finding a cure for acne, one that really worked, and I did.

If you truly believe, it will happen, your cure is right around the corner, stop dreaming, take action today, go out there and educate yourself and find a cure for your acne.

Acne, The Bane Of High School

If you had acne problems, I feel sorry for you. I mean there is nothing worse than the social rejection suffered by those with less than average complexions. The especially sad part is that there was nothing that they could do to prevent it. And on top of that some people suffer from the indirect consequences of acne that can go with a person for the rest of his life.

Now because the problem is so important in so many ways it is easy to see why there has been so much effort put into learning about the problem and trying to solve it. There are a ton of different ways offered to cure acne and some are a lot more worthwhile than others. These cures range from spreading disgusting mixtures of organically produced potions to ultrasonic technology that "zaps" the gland that is producing the offending inflammation.

That is what acne is by the way, inflammation that starts deep down in the dermal layer, that attracts all sorts of different immune competent cells to make the pain, redness, swelling, and pus that you find with acnes. It would be great if we new what turned the "switch" on to this inflammation– but the fact is that we do not. We know that several factors bring it on, a major one being puberty and all of the changes especially the hormonal ones that start circulating through the body. Another major focus is the dirt and oil that get on your face during the day and that you grind in on your pillow at night that is clogging the pores and producing the crops of zits. Another think is the foods that we eat namely foods high in oils, sugars, and chocolate.

The trouble with all of these ideas is that as much as you work to change these factors the chances are that you will not get rid of the painful and unsightly red pus filled pimples. You can wash until the take off the first layer of skin but you won't get rid of them all. You can also stop eating anything good, trying to avoid the foods that supposedly cause acne but if you have any success it will only be partial.

So obviously we haven't found what is at the root of the problem but that doesn't mean the effort isn't there. So my recommendation at this point is to get a doctor that will take the time to get to understand who you are and what methods would be most effective for your particular strain of acne. They have access to the best training and information and they are in the best spot to start working with your individual case and hopefully make your life a lot better.

Why It’s Best To Get Professional Teeth Whitening Services

There are two major ways on how you can transform those 'yellow teeth' into white ones. The first option is to do it all by yourself. You get to the nearest supermarket and buy your weeks' supply of teeth whitening toothpaste and the desensitizing toothpaste. And what you do after is to religiously brush your teeth as recommended by the manufacturer of the product. The other way is the simplest. You get the services of the professional that offers professional teeth whitening services. This is the most cost-effective way of managing your teeth without having to wait for weeks for results. With the services of the pros, you can automatically get your set of white teeth in hours!

So what can you expect from these teeth whitening services?

If you choose this way, then you choose the fastest and the safest way of making your teeth. This is true of course, that you have chosen the right provider. But do remember for good services like this one; expect to pay a premium for it. Right now, the service cost may range from $500 to $800. Though there may be some services that will fall under $500, but be reminded that these services rarely come. In many of these services, the most common method that is used is the light therapy.

This therapy makes the bleaching process faster and more effective. It is said that this process can lighten the shade of the teeth 10 times more than other whitening agents. And the nice thing about this process to whiten the teeth is that the effects can be there for around two years. This means that you will not need another round of professional cleaning and whitening service for the next two years.

When it comes to professional services, there are also those services that are referred to as more specialized, which means that there are added special services for you. For example there are specialize whitening centers that are present in major cities. And these special centers will have dentists that will check first the oral condition of the person before the whitening treatment can be suggested or performed.

If for example there are other serious concerns relating to the oral health condition, then the practitioner will not recommend outright teeth whitening procedure. Rather that person will be referred back to the dentist for proper assistance. If the pre-check reveals no problems, then the person will be up for the procedures related to teeth whitening. If you are willing to undergo this kind of specific procedure, keep in mind that the approved method is through the use of the blue-spectrum light.

If the budget is not enough to cover the professional whitening sessions, then the option is to go for the home bleaching kit. But with these, the whitening sessions will be done by yours on your own time. In the end, the professional teeth whitening services are best for those looking for best results at the soonest possible time.

What To Remember When Shopping For Teeth Whitening Paste

Many studies have it- teeth whitening pastes that are available in the supermarket works and are safe. And when used properly, say twice daily the expected effect by the person can be realized in as a short as two weeks. And everyone can even increase the chance of being in the safe side if they can shop for the whitening tooth paste that is approved by the American Dental Association. And if you are one of those who will try this product for the first time due to its efficacy and safety, there are some things to note and to remember. Listed below are easy-to-do reminders when shopping for your first toothpaste whitener:

* Take seriously what the American Dental Association says. This is the leading organization and entity that you would want to listen to with regards to any products related to dental care. They often select products that comply with their standards. And if the organization is to be consulted, it is best to ask for assistance from your dentist before buying impulsively.

* Bleaching is one of the roles performed by the whitening paste. Now did you know that the efficacy of the bleaching will depend on the amount of peroxide used in the toothpaste? And will also depend on the time used in contact with the teeth? The products that you can get normally from the supermarket will contain around 10 percent peroxide. And the pastes used professionally may contain up to 43 percent peroxide content. Now the next time that you are in need of teeth whitening you know where to turn no.

* Speaking of bleaching, this is what you need if you have yellow teeth. If you have brown or gray teeth, then bleaching will not be as effective as you will expect.

* When shopping for this product, do keep in mind that the crowns, the fillings and the veneers will not be affected by the whitening action of the paste.

* Complement the use of the whitening toothpaste with the services of professional teeth cleaner. This is something that you would like to do if you want to achieve the best results for your teeth. The dentist or any professional is the one that will do the initial cleaning process. The dirt and the stains at the surface of the teeth will be removed, and will be primed up for the whitening session courtesy of the whitening toothpaste.

* Buy the desensitizing toothpaste. This is one good investment if you want to take teeth whitening seriously. This can be used before and after using the teeth whitening toothpaste. The use of this product will limit the sensitizing effects.

What are listed above are some things that should be kept in mind when looking for a teeth whitening toothpaste. This is totally different from your ordinary toothpaste, and as such shopping for the product requires special considerations as well. When you are properly guided, for sure you will get the right product for your needs- just like a teeth whitening toothpaste.

Teeth Whitening and Bleaching

Unlike temporary teeth which are shiny, very white and very clean looking, the permanent teeth that follow once the deciduous teeth are lost are usually less porous. Because of this, permanent teeth come in varying shades from white to off-white and sometimes to yellowish. It could shade darker as the person grows older, perfectly normal.

While the darkening of the teeth as it ages is mainly due to the changes in the teeth's mineral structure, the enamel at the same time gets less porous and less shiny making it more susceptible to stains from bacterial pigments, medication, tobacco, wine, coffee, tea and food. No matter how good the hygiene of a person is, the teeth simply ages. Rightly or wrongly, white brilliant teeth are attributed to health, youth, good grooming and being clean.

In an age where getting the best foot forward is never possible without having a pleasant smile, whitening the teeth no matter the age and no matter the lifestyle, completes the projection that a person wants to convey across. Good thing that there are many ways to do this fast, effective and not costly. This could be done with professional help although for the most part, a DIY – at home whitening does wonders as well. The most common methods are using bleaching pens, bleaching strips, gels and natural bleaching, most of which could be obtained from the local pharmacy and dental supply stores.

There are however some risks involved when doing teeth whitening at home as some teeth could be sensitive than others and gums could also be irritated that could cause degrees of discomfort. When whitening the teeth at home, it will always be recommended to use those that have low concentration of whitening agents. Although this method is far less effective and takes a while longer, it is also the safest. When using hydrogen peroxide for example, the concentration of the mix that is recommended at the back of the bottle should be adhered strictly if not less than what is recommended just to test it out. While studies have shown (Kugel et al) that the effect of peroxides at decreasing the tooth enamel is very insignificant, it nonetheless tends to make the teeth more sensitive for some time and when the proportion of the mix is on the strong side, the mix could result to painful gums and cause irritation to the surrounding tissues inside the mouth.

Some stains though are not so easy to remove and may take longer treatment for the whitening agent to reach the dentine layer. For stubborn stains and uncomfortably dark shades in the teeth, self help may no longer suffice. Treatments could be done by a professional who could use custom bleaching trays, laser treatment, and in cases where discoloration is ugly, porcelain veneers could be applied including dental bonding.

Although teeth whitening are only cosmetic, the reward it provides a person in terms of confidence and a general feeling good grooming and of well-being is enormous.

Teeth Whitening

No matter how fastidious a person is, the teeth will always change its appearance and color. The youthful glow and sparkle of young teeth will in time lost its sheen as the enamel starts developing tiny cracks that will eventually lose the crystalline rods in the tooth, thinning the enamel making the teeth more transparent and showing through the yellowish color of the dentin. Even discounting this natural aging of the teeth, eating habits, food choices, medication, lifestyles, health conditions and many other factors will develop the tiny cracks in the enamel allowing debris to accumulate between the spaces staining the teeth.

Extrinsic staining and intrinsic staining are the two basic types at which the teeth develop stains and discoloration.

Extrinsic stains are developed in the surface of the teeth that resulted from the accumulation of food debris and color. While superficial stains and discoloration could be removed by prophylactic cleaning and brushing, there are stains that are a little more stubborn and could accumulate between the spaces of the tiny cracks in the tooth that would need bleaching to remove the stains. When the stains are not effectively removed and stays on the teeth for a period of time, this could penetrate deeper into the dentin which could require more involved methods.

Those stains that form beneath the enamel are intrinsic stains. Previously, intrinsic stains are believed to be resistant to treatments although today most of it could be removed with close supervision from qualified professionals. Intrinsic stains are caused by the natural process of aging, trauma to the tooth, exposure to drugs containing tetracycline and flourosis.

Other factor that stains the teeth is grinding. Grinding often attributed to stress accelerates micro cracking of the tooth enamel that will hold tiny debris to be accumulated. It also causes the edges of the tooth shade darker, faster. Another big factor is smoking. Nicotine is brownish in color that could stick in the enamel of the tooth and even soak in its structure causing internal discoloration. Red wine may be good for the heart but it contains a high concentration of tannins that causes staining fast.

DNA. All teeth are translucent to some degree. There are people though that are born with teeth that are more translucent than most. Teeth that are more translucent tend to show more staining than those with more opaque teeth.

Teeth transparency is the only known teeth condition today that could not benefit from teeth whitening and teeth bleaching. On the other hand, no amount of teeth bleaching will whiten teeth more than its natural color. In some cases, it could artificially be done but never recommended.

No matter how teeth whitening and bleaching is done, anything involving cosmetic enhancements and restoration is subjective that varies from person to person. There will always be limits to this that are often the cause of the feeling of well being or disappointment.

A good point therefore before any teeth whitening and bleaching is done is ask a realistic assessment from the dentist.

Teeth Whitening

Stains catch attentions easily, when the stain is in the teeth, more so.

How you look today is very important. This is why local home teeth whitening products have become very popular. The dentist will always give the best advice, treatment and service, and it is recommended that even for simple cosmetic enhancements there must at least be a professional consultation. After the initial consultation, the process of getting an appointment, finding the time and actually sitting in the dentist's chair is not always convenient besides there are a lot of conditions where it is actually more practical to get a teeth whitening kit and apply it at home where the person could save enormously on fees and time.

First off though, toothpastes no matter how it is advertised to whiten the teeth do not contain enough substances to alter the color of the teeth. What it contains are silica for example and some aluminum and calcium that will be enough to remove stains but not really to counter the natural discoloration of the teeth as it ages nor does it contain substances that react with the mineral structure to whiten a dark colored teeth.

Second, most tooth bleaching agents such as gurgles and gels contain peroxide. It is not entirely true that using bleaching agents containing such reduces the enamel of the teeth over time. If it does, it is actually very negligible and so does not have adverse effect on the tooth. Sure there could be, in some cases, mild irritation and tooth sensitivity during the initial stages but these usually are gone after a few days of treatment. What basically it does though is change the color of the teeth superficially.

Not all teeth discoloration is superficial. The teeth could be stained from the inside that will show on the outside that will not go away no matter the strips, gels, whitening pastes, bleaching pens and gurgles done. For example, blood that has leeched inside a tooth will discolor it. For these, internal bleaching must be done by a professional. The process is basically the same. A bleaching agent will be placed and sealed inside the tooth that will make its shade lighter given time.

Not all teeth are white. The teeth have sixteen varying shades. While a temporary tooth may be sparkling white, the teeth replacing it may be not. As a person grows older, the teeth darken in shade, no matter how healthy and no matter how clean. But a clean white and shiny teeth is so important, very much so that even in ancient times royalties and people who can afford it applies whitening powder to their teeth even when it has proven to accelerate teeth rotting.

So important in fact that while not all of us could flash a George Clooney smile, we do not want to draw attention where the attention should not be. For one thing, it could very well probably be that the person you just talked too, if the person was paying attention could not be looking at you in the eyes but was watching your mouth while you speak.
