Top Fat Burners

What are the top fat burners and is it true that fat burning supplements can help you to lose weight? In this article we will look at the leading fat burners and blockers and ask whether (and how) they work – and what their side effects may be.

There are two ideas behind the top fat burners. Some increase your metabolism by speeding up your system in some way, a little like caffeine. Others bind to the fat that you eat and block its absorption. Some supplements may also decrease the appetite.

Pyruvate is a natural substance that our bodies produce during the digestive process, as part of the glycolisis or the breakdown of sugar. It seems to help with the breakdown of fats too, preventing them from being stored as fat cells in the body. The idea behind the supplement is that it may stop the body holding on to some of the fat that is eaten.

Since pyruvate is a substance that naturally occurs in the body, it seems to be one of the safer supplements. However, it should not be taken by people who suffer from the heart condition cardiomyopathy. Large doses can lead to digestive problems such as gas and diarrhea, so do not take more than the recommended dose.

Chitosan is another natural product that is made from the shells of crustaceans like crab and shrimp. It is also found in the cell walls of fungi. It is sold in some health food stores as a fat binder. No side effects have been reported, although you might want to avoid it if you are allergic to shrimp. Some studies have found it to be effective but there has not yet been enough research for it to win FDA approval as a weight loss aid.

Ephedra is a plant extract which was traditionally used in Chinese medicine to treat asthma and colds. It is a stimulant that increases blood pressure and heart rate. Because of its action on the circulatory system it can be dangerous, and deaths from heart attacks and strokes have been reported. Therefore, it is banned in the USA. It is not one of the top fat burners that we would recommend.

Orlistat (sold as Xenical or Alli)

Orlistat is a fat blocker that has performed well in research studies. It is certainly one of the top fat burners on sale. It is available in drugstores without a prescription in many countres including the USA, the European Union and Australia. This is definitely one of the top fat burners on sale.

Orlistat or Alli works by binding to a proportion of the dietary fat that is consumed and preventing it from being absorbed. It has been shown to work in trials where people ate a controlled amount of fat. The main side effect is an oily texture to bowel movements which may be caused by the fat being carried out of the body instead of being absorbed.

A lot of these supplements are pretty new so there may not be much research yet. You should not take any fat burning supplements if you are pregnant. If you decide to take one of the top fat burners, please consult with your doctor first to be sure that it is suitable for you. Always read all of the instructions and warnings before taking any supplements.

It is also important to remember that diet supplements will only work if you keep on eating the same amount that you are now, or less. They will not have any effect if you go ahead and eat more because you are taking the supplement.

So even if you are taking diet supplements, it is also important to think about what you are eating. It is always wise to switch to healthier food options and be sure to slowly increase your exercise levels along with using one of the top fat burners.
